The Juneau Street Resilience Pod is a neighborhood group that helps the families on Beacon Hill stay connected with one another and feel supported, especially during climate-related events. Our pod is centered at the intersection of Juneau Street and the south trail end of the Chief Sealth Trail.

Resilience pods: a way for neighbors to support neighbors
When they first started, resilience pods were designed to help neighbors support other neighbors in times of emergency (such as during storms, earthquakes, or wildfires) because many people, especially those from communities with the most health disparities, are not always able to easily access preparedness programs from the City or State.
However, we all know that tight-knit communities like ours are rich in resources, assets, and knowledge. In hard times, neighbors readily step up and help one another. Resilience pods are strategic deployments of what is already happening in our communities. They are organized by folks who live in the neighborhood and serve as safe and easy places for community members to go to, to get location-specific resources, information, and aid during climate-related events.
Because resilience pods are so effective and useful in strengthening communities, over time we’ve moved away from thinking that these pods can only make the most impact during big emergencies. Today, resilience pods like ours are also part of the everyday lives of neighborhoods, building community capacity for people to thrive in and strengthening the relationships and connections between neighbors.
Who are resilience pods for?
Resilience pods are for everyone who lives in our neighborhood, but folks who may need the most support include:
- Black, Indigenous, and other people of color
- LGBTQIA+ folks
- Families with young children
- Seniors
- People with disabilities
Our values
While climate-related events affect everyone in our neighborhood, we recognize that some families are disproportionately affected compared to others. This is why our resilience pod centers the following values:

Racial, Economic, and Climate Justice
We organize to close equity gaps so that those who are most impacted by climate change do not continue to experience harm.

Connection
We value collective action and collaboration, seeking out partnerships and mutually beneficial alliances. We will move forward together as a whole, rather than as individuals.

Accountability
We are committed to the responsibility of taking care of one another. We strive to be dependable, to remain consistent, and to stay curious.

Authenticity
We are real people who want to build trust among neighbors and strengthen the relationships in our community. As long as we show up with care and honesty, we welcome folks to arrive as they are, flaws and all.

Joy
We enjoy being in community with our neighbors. We prioritize art, storytelling, and celebrating our efforts together.
The Juneau Street Resilience Pod
In addition to emergency preparedness, the Juneau Street Resilience Pod supports things like:

A supply library
We hold four community events each year for neighbors to get together to socialize, learn, support one another, and continue growing our pod.

Garden club
Our garden club is a community group of neighbors and plant lovers who get together on a regular basis to volunteer and build activities centered around our neighborhood.

A quarterly zine
We self-publish quarterly zines in collaboration with local artists to educate and inform through art and storytelling. Zines are also a friendly format for non-native English language speakers.

Events
We hold four community events each year for neighbors to get together to socialize, learn, support one another, and continue growing our pod.
